Red brass, sometimes referred to as semi-red or hydraulic bronze, carries a higher concentration of copper and smaller amounts of tin or lead. This composition gives the metal a darker, reddish tint and greater resistance to rust and friction. Red brass is standard in heavy-duty commercial plumbing valves, pump castings, and certain marine fittings. Dirty brass refers to any brass component that still contains foreign materials like iron bolts, plastic handles, or glued-on gaskets.
